Introducing Myself

Hello,
My name is James Orville Real. I'm sure by now you have discovered that I am an artist.
My work is guided by the intersection of multiple aesthetic and cultural influences.

James Real hails from Long Beach, California. James has been drawing since he was a child, and in 1989 he started tattooing. In 2002 James took over the ownership of American Beauty Tattoo. Soon after, James decided to return to college to pursue a formal education in the arts. In 2014 James graduated from California State University Long Beach, where he received a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in drawing and painting.

James values the tradition and history of tattooing and he is constantly trying to advance the craft and improve the public's perception of it by maintaining a professional practice and a gentlemanly demeanor.

Currently, James can be found tattooing full time at his shop, painting in his studio, or perfecting his craft.

James has been interested in art since he was a child. As far back as he can recall in his memory, James has been drawing. His mother has always supported his efforts to be an artist and has continually nourished his pursuit of tattooing; she is rad. Over the years tattooing has increasingly become a larger part of his creative practice.

At age thirteen James gave himself his first tattoo using a needle and some thread. Since that first tattoo, he has been mesmerized by the art-form. Over the last 34 years he has continually striven to advance his knowledge, experience and expertise in the craft. It was this thirst for knowledge that led James to acquire a Bachelors in Fine Art in Painting and Drawing from California State University Long beach.

James has a passion for art that is unrivaled. Whether he is drawing inspiration from Graffiti or Fine-art , from punk-rock fliers or the lyrics in rap song or just life itself, James tries to create designs and artwork that honor and pay homage to those artists that came before him
